In entering this era\, we rely heavily on algorithms of varying complexity\, in part to generate fair decisions by avoiding human biases. However\, societal inequities and downstream data biases often further propagate biases into decisions for the future. In addition\, while most algorithms are tuned to generate the most accurate predictions\, less attention is paid to generating fair results. DESCRIPTION:Program NEON 2023 (prelim) SVEP and NEON (the Swedish Network in Nutritional Epidemiology) \n“Causal inference in nutritional epidemiology – optimising the use of observational data to strengthen the evidence between diet and health” \nPreliminary speakers include Daniel Ibsen\, Århus/Copenhagen University\, Georgia Tomova\, Leeds University and Anton Nilsson\, Lund University \nDescription: \nRandomized controlled studies of long-term dietary adherence and disease incidence are most often not feasible and sometimes unethical to conduct. Disentangling causal effects from associations in nutritional research is therefore a difficult task and most often\, the field relies on the use of observational data to answer such questions. However\, nutritional epidemiology faces many challenges such as confounding bias\, selection bias\, and measurement error from self-reported dietary intake. Are we stuck with only associations or can we use causal inference methods to better separate pure associations from actual causal effects? \nIn this seminar\, we will learn how to; identify biases using graphical tools\, critically think about the concept of adjusting for total energy intake and what comparator nutrients/foods we are contrasting\, as well as how to analyze observational data as randomized controlled studies.  \n

DESCRIPTION:The course provides an introduction into statistical methodology for life sciences and discusses a number of statistical techniques for practical data analysis. Concrete examples and case studies are used to apply the theory to practical situations.  \n\n\nThe statistical techniques covered are several T tests\, Chi‐square tests\, analysis of variance (ANOVA)\, (multiple) linear and logistic regression and survival analysis. The course ends with a group assignment in which a case study is analyzed using the newly acquired statistical techniques.

DESCRIPTION:Climate change is already impacting health in multiple ways and is undermining determinants for good health\, such as clean air and water\, food\, safe shelter\, and economic opportunities. The transdisciplinary conference on Connecting Health and Climate Change brings together researchers\, experts\, policy makers\, and NGO and private sector representatives\, from all career stages. It provides an arena to present research findings and discuss climate change effects on health\, adaptation\, societal consequences\,and opportunities for climate resilient development. \n  \nThe hybrid conference is organized by ENBEL – Enhancing Belmont Research Action to support EU policy making on climate change and health. ENBEL coordinates a network of international health and climate researchers under the Belmont Forum’s Collaborative Research Action on Climate\, Environment and Health and similar EU research programs. Through this conference ENBEL aims at help strengthening the health argument for climate action.
